Martina Gebhardt

Martina Gebhardt products have been developed in such a way that they contain no ingredients that could harm people or the environment. The raw materials for creams, lotions and sprays are 100% natural, more than 95% of which come from Demeter or controlled organic cultivation. Martina Gebhardt's wealth of knowledge also includes spagyric. This is an alchemical method in which high-quality essences are distilled from plants and natural salts are dissolved from their ashes.

The Founder

Martina Gebhardt architect and natural cosmetics pioneer

Martina Gebhardt, born in Munich in 1959, began making herbal creams from medicinal plants as a teenager. The catalyst was a personal experience: a sage-and-thyme ointment with a lanolin base helped fade a scar left by a dog bite. She used the proceeds to fund her architecture studies, which she completed in 1986 at the Fachhochschule München. In October 1986 she founded Martina Gebhardt Naturkosmetik GmbH.

From supplying health food stores, an international brand emerged. Exports to Japan and the USA began in 1998. In 2010, the entire range became the first in the world from a cosmetics company to receive Demeter certification. In 2014, she acquired Kloster Wessobrunn as the company's headquarters, which she is restoring in accordance with heritage requirements, drawing on her architectural training. Since 2023, her son Michael Spring has been managing director.

“Nature gives us everything we need for healthy skin.”

The Philosophy

Demeter, Spagyrik und 100% natural raw materials

Over 95% of raw materials come from Demeter or certified organic cultivation. The Demeter label is the strictest standard in organic cosmetics: at least 90% of ingredients must come from biodynamic farming, and social criteria throughout the supply chain are also assessed. Synthetic or nature-identical materials are not used. Glycerin and alcohol are also avoided (except in the tonics).

A central element is the spagyric essences: a traditional alchemical process in which medicinal plant tinctures are distilled and the residue is calcinated to dissolve mineral salts. Both fractions are then reunited. All products are filled into opal glass, sterilised by heat. All products are cruelty-free; the brand is a member of the International Manufacturers' Association against Animal Testing in Cosmetics.

Buying Guide

Which line suits my skin?

The Sheabutter Line is the gentlest option: without essential oils, suitable for very sensitive and allergy-prone skin. The Rose Line is for dry, sensitive skin that needs moisture. Oily or blemish-prone skin will find its match in the Salvia Line. For demanding skin seeking regeneration, the Ginseng Line is recommended.

Mature skin is well served by the Happy Aging Line. Young or combination skin will find light textures in the Young & Active Line. Martina Gebhardt also recommends choosing by scent, as each line has its own character. If in doubt, our consultants at Belladonna are happy to help.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything about Martina Gebhardt natural cosmetics

Demeter is the strictest standard in organic and natural cosmetics. It requires that at least 90% of ingredients come from biodynamic cultivation and checks social criteria along the entire supply chain. Martina Gebhardt was the first cosmetics company worldwide to have its entire range Demeter-certified in 2010. Today, according to company information, over 95% of raw materials come from Demeter or certified organic cultivation.
Spagyric is a traditional alchemical process: medicinal plant tinctures are distilled, the residue is calcinated to ash, and mineral salts are dissolved from this ash. Distillate and mineral salts are then reunited. This makes water-, oil- and salt-soluble plant components jointly available. Martina Gebhardt initially developed the process independently before learning that it had been known by this name for thousands of years.
Opal glass protects the contents from light and enables heat sterilisation of the packaging. This eliminates the need for biocidal preservatives. According to the company, Martina Gebhardt has avoided plastic packaging and outer cartons from the very beginning.
The range covers all skin types. The Sheabutter Line is particularly suitable for very sensitive and allergy-prone skin. The Rose Line for dry, sensitive skin. The Salvia Line for oily or blemish-prone skin. The Ginseng Line for demanding skin. The Happy Aging Line for mature skin. All lines share short, natural ingredient lists without synthetic additives.

Belladonna Naturkosmetik is an authorised specialist retailer for Martina Gebhardt and carries the full range, online with fast delivery or in person at our specialist store in Berlin, Bergmannstr. 107, 10961 Berlin.
All products are manufactured in the brand's own workshop at Kloster Wessobrunn, Klosterhof 4, 82405 Wessobrunn, Upper Bavaria, Germany. The monastery has been the company headquarters since 2014. Production is largely carried out by hand, according to the brand.
Martina Gebhardt is positioned in the premium natural cosmetics segment. Day creams range from around 25 to 60 EUR depending on the line, cleansing products from 15 to 35 EUR. Current prices for the full range are available at belladonna-naturkosmetik.de/en/brands/martina-gebhardt/.
Not entirely. Most creams contain lanolin (wool wax), an animal by-product derived from sheep's wool, as well as beeswax. This means they are vegetarian but not vegan. Some individual products in the range may be free of animal-derived ingredients. All products are cruelty-free.
The Salvia Cream from the Salvia Line is considered the brand's most iconic classic. The original formula dates back to the 1970s and remains almost unchanged today. It is designed for blemish-prone and oily skin and contains sage and thyme extracts according to the manufacturer.
