J. F. Schwarzlose Berlin
Germany's oldest active perfume house
J. F. Schwarzlose Berlin is Germany's only historic luxury perfume house still active today. Founded in 1856 by Joachim Friedrich Schwarzlose, appointed royal court supplier in 1869. After a hiatus in 1976, the brand was revived in 2012 by Lutz Herrmann, Tamas Tagscherer and perfumer Véronique Nyberg. All unisex fragrances are created in Berlin, with packaging components from Germany and Europe. Available at Belladonna Naturkosmetik in Berlin.
Buying Guide
Which Schwarzlose fragrance suits me?
J. F. Schwarzlose Berlin is niche perfume for people who want a fragrance house with real history and no mainstream scents. All fragrances are unisex. The Discovery Set (EUR 50, with several samples) is a recommended starting point, as niche fragrances can smell very different on different skin.
1A-33 or Rosa Centifolia
Wer nichts riskieren will, fängt hier an.
Rausch, Trance or Leder 6
Es ist 2 Uhr morgens. Irgendwo in Moabit. Alles davon bleibt.
Altruist or Treffpunkt 8 Uhr
Note on pricing: Schwarzlose fragrances are niche perfumes in the premium segment, produced in small batches with high-quality raw materials. Starter sizes begin from EUR 34 according to the current range; Leder 6.9 as an Extrait de Parfum is EUR 285. The Discovery Set costs EUR 50 and provides a good overview of the collection.
Book a personal fragrance consultation →Why try niche perfume before buying?
Niche fragrances are more complex than commercial perfumes and react strongly to individual body chemistry. What smells good in the bottle or on a test strip can develop very differently on skin. Belladonna recommends testing at least one fragrance as a sample before committing to a full bottle. The Schwarzlose Discovery Set is a good starting point. More about niche fragrances at Belladonna.
Die Kollektion
Revival and new Berlin fragrances
The collection divides into two categories: reinterpretations of historic Schwarzlose classics, whose original formulas were reconstructed through chromatographic analysis of old flacons and then reinterpreted for today, and new creations that translate the Berlin of now into fragrance. All fragrances are unisex.

From 1856 to today: Berlin fragrance history
Joachim Friedrich Schwarzlose opened his pharmacy and drug store at Markgrafenstraße 29 in Berlin, near the Gendarmenmarkt, in 1856.
The golden age was the Roaring Twenties: Schwarzlose supplied the Chinese imperial court (a flacon from Pu Yi's collection can still be seen in the Forbidden City in Beijing), exported to Europe, Asia and Australia, and counted Josephine Baker among its customers. Famous flacons were designed by Bauhaus student Wilhelm Wagenfeld; Rosa Royalin and Violette Royalin came in Baccarat crystal. After the Second World War and the construction of the Berlin Wall, the company never fully recovered.
Joachim Friedrich Schwarzlose opens the pharmacy and drug store "J. F. Schwarzlose Söhne" in Berlin.
Granted the title "Royal Court Supplier". Sons Kurt and Max expand the perfume production.
Acquisition of Treu & Nuglisch (court supplier since the 1820s). Beginning of international expansion.
Launch of 1A-33, named after the Berlin car registration plate. Aldehydic components become globally popular through this fragrance.
Golden age. Export to the Chinese imperial court. First celebrity campaign with film star Edmonde Guy. World's first fragrance vending machine.
Production halted due to the war. Factory in Moabit severely damaged.
Final closure following the Berlin Senate's decision to rezone the factory site in Moabit.
Revival by Lutz Herrmann, Tamas Tagscherer and perfumer Véronique Nyberg. First product: 1A-33.

Leder 6
Sinful Berlin,in a flacon
According to brand information, perfumer Véronique Nyberg distils Berlin's club culture into every note. None of it is loud. All of it lingers.
Three professionals revive Berlin
The 2012 revival is not a rebranding, it is real reconstruction work: the team rebuilt historic formulas through chromatographic analysis of old perfume flacons, replaced now-prohibited ingredients with contemporary alternatives and reinterpreted the results. Some formulas were only confirmed by Schwarzlose descendants after the work was already complete.
Production takes place close to the historic Schwarzlose factory in Berlin-Moabit. All packaging components come from Germany or Europe. The team places great value on working with long-established family businesses.
