The story of L:A Bruket begins with a practical problem: Monica Kylén, ceramicist and artist, was making soap dishes and looking for a soap that matched her philosophy of quality and design. Something organic, premium, honest, which she could not find in Varberg. So she made one herself. In an IKEA pot in her basement, from fine organic raw materials. This first soap became the starting point for a natural skincare brand, officially founded in 2008 together with her husband Mats Johansson, who brought a background in fashion, footwear and interior brands. L:A Bruket is one of many outstanding natural cosmetics brands in our Belladonna brand range.
Varberg on Sweden’s west coast was no coincidence. The town has been known as a spa and bathing destination for over 200 years, the Kallbadhuset cold bathing house opened in 1866. The people of Varberg have learned across generations to live with salt, water, wind and cold, and it is from this tradition that Mats and Monica developed L:A Bruket’s philosophy: not against nature, but with it.

L:A Bruket understands itself as a modern interpretation of an age-old idea: thalassotherapy, the use of marine elements such as salt, seaweed and seawater as remedies for skin and body. Varberg has lived this tradition for generations. L:A Bruket translates it into contemporary, high-quality formulations: sea salt scrubs, seaweed baths, care enriched with plant oils and essential oils, raw materials sourced as close as possible to the west coast. The goal is not a single active ingredient or technology, but a holistic, sensory wellness experience.
All L:A Bruket products contain over 90 per cent natural ingredients. The base of the skincare range is always organic or of natural origin. Where nature-identical preservatives are used in individual products, such as those found naturally in lingonberries but which cannot be produced at industrial scale, this is communicated transparently. No pure palm oil, no parabens, no sulphates, no silicones, no synthetic colourants or fragrances. All packaging made from recycled and recyclable PCR, Post Consumer Recycled PET of food grade. The characteristic dark amber pharmacy bottles protect light-sensitive natural ingredients.

Wash & Peel
Sea salt scrubs, liquid soaps, shower gels and bath additions, the starting point of the L:A Bruket routine. The Sea Salt Scrubs and Bath Salts are signature products of the brand: mineralising, invigorating and richly scented with spicy aromas of sage/rosemary/lavender or lemongrass.

Swedish bathing culture
Varberg on Sweden’s west coast has been a spa town for over 200 years. The Kallbadhuset, the cold bathing house, opened in 1866 and continues to shape daily life in the town today. People bathe in the sea year-round, including in winter. Mats Johansson describes the rugged coast as the defining influence: “The hair and skin are exposed to the harsh coastal climate with its constant changes of rain, wind, sun and rain again. But instead of hiding from nature, we turn to it for the answer.” L:A Bruket is an attempt to pass on this lived relationship with nature in the form of a product.

The vision of L:A Bruket is that of a personal spa at home: to enhance wellbeing with a few products and a conscious, ritualised routine. Mats Johansson speaks of the routine itself as the goal, not just the result on the skin. The textures should stimulate and activate, the scent profiles should influence mood, the application should become a deliberate pause in the day. L:A Bruket intentionally thinks in steps, not in individual products.
The products are formulated so that each step brings the best of Varberg’s surroundings: sea salt exfoliates and mineralises, plant oils nourish without greasiness, essential oils activate or calm depending on the scent profile. All formulas are concentrated, a small amount goes a long way, which is kinder to both skin and the environment. The products are expressly designed for women and men alike.
L:A Bruket liquid soaps and shower gels contain no aggressive sulphates, they cleanse gently with mild plant-based surfactants enriched with essential oils that already begin to influence mood during washing. Recommendation: the lemongrass profile for the morning (invigorating, fresh), the sage/rosemary/lavender variant for the evening (grounding and calming). Apply to damp skin, lather, rinse. The skin does not feel dry after washing, a sign of well-formulated, sulphate-free surfactants.
The Sea Salt Scrub, the signature product of the brand, removes dead skin cells, stimulates circulation and leaves the skin silky smooth. Apply to damp skin in the shower and massage in circular movements, the sea salt crystals exfoliate mechanically, while the plant oils (depending on variant: almond oil, rapeseed oil or safflower oil) leave a light protective layer. No separate body oil needed after rinsing. Apply two to three times a week, or more often for very dry skin. Do not use on irritated or broken skin.
Apply to still-slightly-damp skin after shower or bath, the moisture in the skin helps to lock in the actives more effectively. L:A Bruket Body Creams are richer and particularly suited to dry skin and winter; the Body Lotions are lighter and absorb quickly for everyday use. Both contain cold-pressed plant oils and leave no greasy film. Especially for arms, legs, décolleté and stomach. Give the hands a little extra attention, they endure more daily strain than any other part of the body.
The L:A Bruket Hand Cream absorbs quickly and leaves no stickiness, ideal after handwashing, morning and evening. The Restorative Algae Hand Peel for intensive weekly care: the algae formula exfoliates gently and stimulates skin renewal. Apply to dry hands, massage for two minutes, rinse. Then immediately apply Hand Cream, the skin is now particularly receptive. The hand creams are available in various scent variants, all expressly unisex.
The L:A Bruket scented candles are filled by hand into mouth-blown amber glass vessels, using organic soy wax with a cotton wick. The glass container is refillable, reducing waste. The scent palette: Coriander (herbal-fresh), Grapefruit (invigorating), Black Oak (woody-dark), Sweet Tobacco (warm-spiced) and Beach Fire (smoky). The room diffusers use natural rattan reeds and come in recyclable brown grass bottles. Not just for the bathroom, also as a companion for a mindful evening at home.
complementary ritualThe Sea Salt Bath, bath salt with essential oils, is the most direct translation of Varberg’s bathing culture into the home. Stir into warm bathwater (two to three tablespoons is sufficient), leave to work for 15–20 minutes. The sea salt mineralises, the essential oils relax muscles and mind. Do not use liquid soap directly after the bath, the skin has already been cleansed by the salt solution. Instead: apply Body Cream or Body Oil directly to still-damp skin.

What began as a bar of soap in a basement is today an internationally recognised natural skincare brand. L:A Bruket is stocked in concept stores, spas and selected beauty specialists worldwide, since 2022, Korea has become the largest single market, with Asian sales now exceeding Scandinavia. Flagship stores include Paris and Berlin. Since 2019, the French investment company Experienced Capital Partners has held a majority stake; Monica and Mats remain active as co-owners and the creative force behind the brand.
Despite its international growth, L:A Bruket remains connected to Varberg. Formulation development and production takes place on the Swedish west coast, by an experienced team with long-standing expertise in natural and organic skincare. The range today covers body, skin and hair care, hand care and home fragrance, each threaded through with the characteristic, spicy and aromatic scent profiles that have distinguished the brand from the start.
